A two day National Webinar on “Deciphering the Roles of Biodiversity and Sustainability” was organized by the Department of Botany in collaboration with IQAC, St.Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama on 12th and 13th August, 2021.
The Keynote Speaker of the webinar was Dr.Lohit K. Baishya, Principal Scientist (Agronomy), Joint Director, ICAR, Nagaland Centre and the Resource Persons were Dr. Lanukumla Ao, Head Department of History, Don Bosco College, Kohima:Nagaland, Dr. Neizo Puro, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, Nagaland University, Lumami campus and Er. Samuel Zeliang, Senior Program Officer, Directorate of IT and Communication, Government of Nagaland.
In the inaugural session, the keynote speaker, Dr.Baishya in his presentation highlighted on Biodiversity conservation and climate change. He stressed upon food scarcity and malnutrition problem faced in the world today due to shortage of food supply and suggested that sustainable and integrated form of agriculture plays a role not only in meeting the food requirements but also as a conservation strategy. He also mentioned that the importance of biodiversity is not only in structure like cover and aesthetics but also in function like maintaining nutrient cycle, carbon fixation, water cycle etc.
The inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Kizukala Jamir, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, SJC (A) Jakhama and welcome address was given by Dr. Fr. George Keduolhou Angami, Principal, St.Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Jakhama.
This was followed by the 1st Technical session wherein the resource person Dr. Lanukumla Ao spoke on “Sacred Groves- Repositories of rich heritage and tools for biodiversity conservation: the Naga chapter.” The session was chaired by Dr. Thejasenuo Julia Kirha, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, SJC(A) Jakhama.
The 2nd day of the National Webinar comprised of the 2nd and 3rd Technical session. Dr. Neizo Puro was the resource person for the 2nd technical session. He delivered his talk on “Biodiversity and Sustainable livelihood in the North-East Tribals of India”. The 2nd technical session was chaired by Ms. Neithongunuo Angela Belho, Head Department of Botany, SJC(A) Jakhama.
In the 3rd Technical session, Er. Samuel Zeliang spoke on: E-waste management. This session was chaired by Dr. Hormila G. Zingkhai, IQAC Co-ordinator, SJC(A) Jakhama. The two day Webinar culminated with the vote of thanks by Fr. Peter Solo, Dean of Science, SJC(A) Jakhama.
